Our work in the Boston Retirement System

Established in 1923, we manage retirement benefits for public service retirees and their beneficiaries. Find out more about what we do.

The Boston Retirement System is a governmental defined benefit pension. We administer retirement benefits to all employees of the City of Boston, as well as its autonomous agencies, including:

  • the City of Boston
  • the Boston Planning & Development Agency
  • the Boston Housing Authority
  • the Boston Public Health Commission, and
  • the Boston Water and Sewer Commission.

There are more than 14,000 retired members and beneficiaries in the system plus more than 20,000 active members. The current value of the pension system’s assets is about $5.4 billion.

Who we are

The Retirement Board is made up of:

  • two members elected by active and retired members of the system
  • the City Auditor as ex officio
  • a fourth member appointed by the Mayor, and
  • a fifth member elected by the Board.
