Are you interested in volunteering or doing research at the City Archaeology lab? Here’s what you need to know:
Learn about how you can help
The City Archaeology program relies on volunteers, and all are welcome. Whether you are new to archaeology or a seasoned professional, we would love to have you join us.
The lab is open all year from Wednesday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 5p.m., but you need to set up an appointment before you visit.
Archaeological digs usually take place from March to November, but it varies each year. Most volunteering occurs in the lab at 201 Rivermoor Street in West Roxbury. We need help processing artifacts from sites across Boston.
Contact the City Archaeologist
City Archaeologist Joe Bagley organizes volunteering at the lab. Please call him at at 617-635-3097, or email archaeology@boston.gov. You can schedule a tour of the lab with him, and discuss volunteer opportunities.
Before you get started
The City Archaeology Lab has more than one million artifacts from over 30 collections. The City Archaeologist and volunteers are now digitizing all archaeological data.
The City’s Archives and Records Department also has an online research tool.
