Celebrating 50 Years of the Boston Landmarks Commission!

BLC 50th Full Logo

Established in 1975, the Boston Landmarks Commission is Celebrating 50 Years of protecting Boston's built heritage!

Kathy Kottaridis

Welcome!

For fifty years, the Boston Landmarks Commission has helped Boston honor its past while shaping a thoughtful future. Preservation is not only about protecting buildings — it is about safeguarding the stories, communities, and shared memories that give our city meaning.

Created in 1975 during a period of rapid change, the Commission emerged from a simple but powerful belief: growth should be guided with care, public voice, and respect for the places that matter. Since then, the Commission and Boston’s local historic district commissions have helped steward hundreds of landmarks and historic places across the city.

Even as Boston faces new challenges, from housing and climate resilience to economic change, historic preservation continues to strengthen neighborhoods, support sustainable investment, and expand the stories we tell about our shared past.

We invite you to explore this anniversary page and discover the people, places, and moments that shaped Boston’s rich and layered city—past, present, and future.
