How to Certify Your Fire Escape, Balcony, or Exterior Bridge

If you own or maintain property with a fire escape, balcony, or exterior bridge, you must register the structure with the Inspectional Services Department every five years. Learn how to start the process below.

Before you get started

Hire a licensed fire escape installer or registered professional engineer to conduct a comprehensive inspection of all components:

  • Obtain three estimates (verify references, if possible).
  • Establish a detailed written contract outlining the repairs, equipment, and labor costs.

  • Ensure both parties sign the contract.

  • Arrange for payment in increments.
  • Verify that the professional's license and address are clearly stated on the contract. PO boxes are unacceptable.
  • Do not leave any blank lines on the contract.

Submit the application in person

The licensed professional is responsible for obtaining all necessary permits, including a Short-Form Permit and a Fire Escape and Fire Balcony Affidavit. Please note: Uncertified property owners are not able to secure these permits.

Prepare to pay the fees

You need to pay a $50 fee at the cashiers window. Fees can be paid in the form of cash, check, American Express, Master Card, Visa, and Discover.

The licensed professional can email the completed affidavit to ISDAffidavits@boston.gov. The $50 filing fee can be paid in person or online via a payment link that will be shared after your form is reviewed and approved.
