Monument Square Landmark District Community Meeting
The Monument Square Landmark District Study Committee will host a free public event to engage with members of the Charlestown community regarding their recommendations for designation of the proposed Landmark District and Protection Area. Community members can learn about the proposal, ask questions, and provide feedback to the Study Committee.
The public is encouraged to attend to hear about:
- What designation would mean for the neighborhood and property owners
- Potential boundaries of the proposed Landmark District and Protection Area
- The timeline of the designation process
Study Committee members and Office of Historic Preservation staff will be present to answer questions and collect feedback from the community.

Background on the proposed Monument Square Landmark District
On July 6, 2022, 26 registered voters submitted a petition to the Boston Landmarks Commission to designate the Monument Square area as a Landmark District. The Study Committee is tasked with understanding and documenting the historic, architectural, and archaeological significance of the neighborhood, proposing the district’s boundaries, and crafting recommendations for long-term management of the district that preserve the area’s unique character while allowing thoughtful, context-sensitive growth.
