Project Background

Thoreau Path is a pedestrian path that knits together the West End neighborhood of Boston. This path has long served as a vital community asset, providing a car free walking route and beautiful green space.

A section of Thoreau Path was recently reconstructed by the Alcott Apartments, however the last City-led improvements date back to 2010. The path is in need of state of good repair work, as made clear by the following observed existing conditions:

  • Aging and deteriorating path surfaces make travel difficult and uncomfortable
  • Stormwater management and drainage issues have led to erosion
  • Inconsistent street lighting leaves some sections of the path feeling unsafe

Design

  • A reconstructed concrete path that is smoother and fully accessible.
  • Improved drainage along the path to for more effective stormwater management, minimizing pooling and erosion.
  • Additional and upgraded light fixtures to improve visibility and lighting consistency.
  • Protection for all existing trees in the project area.
