Install or Replace Siding

If you’re replacing siding on a home or building, you’ll need a Short-Form permit and, in some cases, an Electrical Permit if you are moving or installing electrical wiring.

Who can install or replace siding?

  • Homeowners and contractors can apply for the Short-form Permit.
  • Only a contractor with a valid, non-expired Massachusetts trade license may apply for an Electrical Permit and perform any work related to installing or replacing electrical services or wiring.

What permits do I need?

Short-Form Permit
  • For replacing siding when no other structural changes need to be made, such as cutting into a wall.
Additional Permits

You will need other permits that only licensed contractors can apply for, including:

Electrical Permit
  • For contractors installing, repairing, or moving wiring during the installation of the siding.

How do I apply?

The Short-form and Electrical Permit pages list the steps you need to take, including:

  • Understanding what documentation is required
  • How to apply online
  • What to expect after applying
  • What to do after work is completed
