Install or Replace a Sink, Toilet, Shower, or Bathtub

If you’re replacing or installing a sink, toilet, shower, or bathtub, you’ll need to hire a contractor who can apply for a Plumbing Permit and perform the work.

If you are renovating an entire bathroom, please refer to the renovate a bathroom or kitchen website instead.

Who can install or replace?

  • Homeowners and contractors can apply for the Short-form Permit.
  • Only a contractor with a valid, non-expired Massachusetts trade license may apply for a Plumbing Permit and perform any plumbing work related to installing or replacing sinks, toilets, showers, or bathtubs.

What permits do I need?

Short-Form Permit
  • For opening up any non-structural walls while performing the work.
Additional Permits

You may need other permits that only licensed contractors can apply for, including:

Plumbing Permit
