Moakley Park Initiatives

As part of the Resilient Moakley Park Plan, recommendations were made for phased improvements within the Park and to the north and south. Please use this website to keep up to date on the initiatives that are currently happening in and around the park.

It’s an exciting time for Boston! The City, State, and Federal government are investing in our future. Plans for improvements to Moakley Park are underway.

These improvements include:

  • upgrading the sports fields
  • adding new community gathering spaces
  • increasing planting

With these improvements, the plan also prepares South Boston for the effects of a changing climate. The park landscape is designed to:

  • Prevent coastal flood waters from entering the neighborhood
  • Manage stormwater from increased rain events
  • Add planting, water features, and use materials to keep the park cool on hot days

The elevated landscape will be fully accessible, with walking paths at the high point running the length of the park and will provide views out to the Boston Harbor and Islands.

Working with our partner Boston Harbor Now the park is hosting regular events including a Moakley Summer Nights series, Monthly Clean Ups, and more.

Much work has been done, and much more is to come. Use this site to track our progress and add your voice!

Next Phase: Construction of Resilient Landscape + Phase A

Construction of the Phase A of the park is expected to be a combination of City capital budget and federal funding. The current design and permitting phase of the Resilient Moakley Park Project is funded through FEMA’s Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) Grant

The full park improvement will likely be built out over multiple phases. This is projected to take up to 10 years.
