Pics in the Parks: Winter Challenge 4 - Light and Shadows

Our weekly photography clinic has weekly challenges to help you hone and improve your photography skills.

Theme:

Light and Shadows

Goals:

This week we want to pay attention to the way light and shadows play on an object.

Tips:
  • In the winter there are less hours of daylight and the sun sits lower in the sky.
  • Keep in mind that snow reflects the color of the light that lights it. Clear skies and clean winter air can make for richly saturated colors before sunrise or after sunset.
  • Golden hour or "magic hour" is the period of time shortly after sunrise or right before sunset. At golden hour low light by direct sunlight is usually yellow or orange, while midday it is white and sometimes blue on very clear blue sky days.
  • Midday full sun shadows will be black or gray. Overcast light which is diffused by clouds can result in a soft featureless look to the snow.
Challenge:

Your challenge this week is to utilize shadows to add extra elements to your photographs.

Submit your photo to be included in our digital photo gallery by emailing Parks@Boston.Gov. Submissions may be used for future Boston Parks and Recreation Department marketing purposes.
