Amplifying All Voices

The City aims to ensure that every resident can reach their full potential regardless of their background, and to remove the barriers that hinder Bostonians from having access to opportunities.

As Boston emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, the City is committed to launching new initiatives and expanding existing programs that help elevate all residents.

Embracing the Diversity of All Bostonians

To take bold steps toward ensuring that everyone's voice is heard, the City is making investments to support communities that have historically been left out of decision-making.

ADDING SEATS TO THE TABLE
  • Expand the new Office of Black Male Advancement to remove barriers to opportunity for Black men and boys in Boston.
  • Seed the new Office of LGBTQ+ Advancement to ensure Bostonians of all gender identities and sexualities can thrive.
  • Create an Indigenous Communities Fellow position to make sure City programs support indigenous residents and uplift their histories and experiences.
SUPPORTING VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES
  • $2.1 million increase in the Office of Returning Citizens for case management and supports for people returning to the City after release from state, federal, and county facilities.
  • $500,000 to bolster access to critical immigration legal services through the Office of Immigrant Advancement.
  • Expand the Dreamers Fellowship program from two to three sessions per year, providing increased leadership training and hands-on experience to immigrant youth. 

Accessible and Equitable Government

The FY23 budget includes investments to ensure that City services are delivered equitably and without linguistic barriers.

EXPANDING LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATIONS ACCESS
  • Increase capacity to more effectively support City staff in making services accessible to residents who speak or write in different languages and those with sight or vision impairment.
  • Hire in-house translators to quickly respond to document translation needs.
  • Invest $200,000 in technological improvements and pursue larger contracting opportunities with interpretation vendors.
MAKING GOVERNMENT WORK FOR ALL RESIDENTS
  • Establish the Office of Participatory Budgeting to ensure that residents inform how City dollars are spent.
  • Create the first Equity Officer to engage City departments on equitable service delivery.
  • Build a new Community Ambassador program in Age Strong to connect older adults to information and resources.
