Boston celebrates Black Restaurant Month

The Boston Black Hospitality Coalition, formed in May 2020 to support the Black-owned restaurants and bars that serve as essential and historic spaces in the City of Boston, recently announced June 2021 as Boston Black Restaurant Month.

This June marks a century since the massacre of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma, opening up a national moment to celebrate the resiliency and perseverance of Black entrepreneurship, culture, and widespread community contributions.

Black-owned restaurants and other businesses have historically been excluded from access to credit, technical assistance, government contracts, and other resources. Boston Black Restaurant Month is a time to uplift and celebrate Boston’s vibrant Black business community, while encouraging residents and visitors to support and enjoy the creativity, culture and cuisine of the more than 70 Black-owned restaurants in the City.

During this week’s Council meeting, the Council adopted a resolution recognizing June 2021 as Boston Black Restaurant Month in the City of Boston, and extended their appreciation for the role Boston’s Black-owned restaurants play in our City’s food infrastructure.
