Artists sought for Blue Hill Avenue (Grove Hall) mural

The Transportation Department is seeking artists for mural proposals for the wall at 457 Blue Hill Avenue, adjacent to the Grove Hall Plaza.

The Boston Transportation Department is seeking proposals from artists to paint artwork on a privately-owned wall at 457 Blue Hill Avenue in the Grove Hall neighborhood. This wall is highly visible and faces onto a public plaza and popular restaurants. We are seeking artists who would like to create a unique piece of artwork for the Grove Hall community on this wall measuring 101 feet long and 13.5 feet tall:

Proposals are due by October 23, 2020, via email. More details about how specifically to submit a proposal can be found at the Call for Artists below.

Through the project’s public engagement programming over the last year, the community has identified four shared values as desired guiding principles for the series of murals along Blue Hill Avenue:

  1. Unity, Togetherness, Community
  2. Black Joy
  3. Safe and Strong Youth
  4. Celebration of Caribbean Culture in Boston

This project is part of the Blue Hill Avenue Transportation Action Plan. It aims to improve the quality of life for corridor users. We're seeking to improve on the City’s current state of transportation-related equity by re-imagining the avenue’s structures and functions with respect not only to mobility, but to safety and public space as well.

The full Call for Artists can be found online.

All questions about the Call can be submitted via email to jacob.wessel@boston.gov by October 11, 2020, at 5 p.m.  Feel free to also reach out to connect artists that may be interested in taking on this project.
