South Street (Brighton)

In the fall of 2023, we added three speed humps and signage to South Street. In the summer of 2024, we will add striping indicating people can bike in both directions. Please observe all posted signage during construction.

JULY 2024 UPDATE

We are working to finalize our contractor schedule for striping. We hope to complete construction in Summer 2024 as weather and contractor availability allows. Once work begins, construction may take 1 - 2 weeks to complete.

Once the start date is determined, crews will post signage along the corridor to notify abutters. We will update the project webpage and send an email to the project email list.

We appreciate your patience during this construction period.

Today, South Street is one-way for travel from Chestnut Hill Avenue to Commonwealth Avenue. It is relatively flat, and drivers have a tendency to pick up the pace if they see a green light at Comm. Ave. Other parts of the street network nearby follow a hillier topography.

We will add speed humps to calm traffic. We will also install signs that permit people on bikes to travel in both directions, avoiding hills.

WHY South Street

South Street is a low-traffic neighborhood street that connects bicyclists who live near the Chestnut Hill Reservoir to the rest of Allston-Brighton.

This project is part of a bold plan for transforming Boston's streets to better serve people walking, rolling, and riding bikes. Over the next three years, we will expand our bike network so that 50% of residents will be a 3-minute walk from a safe and connected bike route.

We posted flyers on front doors, light poles, and cars on South Street. We sent an email to the project list about upcoming in-person and virtual events. We also mailed postcards to households on South Street and the blocks nearby. At these events, we shared design plans with you and answered questions.

Allston-Brighton Transportation Updates Virtual Meeting

We hosted a virtual meeting with the Boston Planning and Development Agency to share updates about transportation projects happening in Allston-Brighton, including our Better Bike Lanes projects. In a breakout room, we shared our concept designs for South Street, discussed our next steps for community engagement, and took your questions.

Update: April 2023

On April 20, we posted flyers on front doors, light poles, and cars on South Street between Comm Ave and Chestnut Hill Avenue. We sent an email to the project list about upcoming in-person and virtual events.

On Saturday, April 29, we hosted a drop-in session at the corner of South Street and Comm Ave. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., we spoke with neighbors and people passing by about the project. We shared concept designs, answered questions, and recorded comments.

Update: February 2023

On February 10 and 16, we posted flyers on front doors, light poles, and cars on South Street between Comm Ave and Chestnut Hill Avenue. Later in February, we mailed over 1,100 postcards to households on South Street and the blocks nearby.
