We're making safety improvements at five intersections along Pleasant Street between East Cottage Street and Sawyer Avenue. Our goal is to calm traffic speeds and make crosswalks better for kids, elders, and people with disabilities.
Construction Updates
Construction UpdatesWe’ve made significant progress on construction of new curbs and stormwater infrastructure. For the next few weeks, we’ll continue installing new curb and sidewalks at Taft Street, Victoria Street, Morrill Street, and Mayfield Street.
We expect to start installing the raised crosswalk across Pleasant Street at the Victoria Street/Morrill Street intersection next week. Please follow all posted signage for temporary traffic or sidewalk closures.
Pleasant Street and East Cottage Street/Pond Street
Construction activity will not begin at this location for another few weeks. This intersection is being used as a staging zone for work at other locations.
Pleasant Street at Willis Street/Taft Street
We’ve completed the installation of new stormwater basins and curbs on the east side of the street., For the next few weeks, we’ll work on completing curb, sidewalk, and ramp installation, and building the raised crosswalk.
Pleasant Street at Mayfield Street
Installation of new curb and stormwater infrastructure is in progress on the west side of the intersection. Once sidewalk and green infrastructure work is complete, work will shift to the east side of the intersection.
Pleasant Street at Morrill Street/Victoria Street
This intersection is the most complete to date, with stormwater and sidewalk installation mostly finished on the west side. We expect to construct the raised crosswalk and pedestrian ramps next week.
Pleasant Street at the Edward Everett Elementary
Work will begin after the close of the school year to minimize impacts to student arrival and dismissal activities.
Construction activity will occur near the following streets:
- Victoria Street
- Morrill Street
- Mayfield Street
Construction begins! We'll begin by replacing stormwater infrastructure (excavating drainage basins) at the intersection of Morrill Street and Victoria Street.

A closer look
A closer lookIn 2022, we added temporary safety improvements to make crossings safer and slow speeding at this wide, irregularly-shaped intersection.
We will rebuild this intersection with permanent infrastructure at adds more public space, upgraded crosswalks and curb ramps, and green infrastructure.
We heard that the crosswalk near the entrance of the Edward Everett Elementary School is positioned on a curve in the street does not feel safe, especially when parked cars are lined up and block visibility of people crossing during school arrival and dismissal. People shared that drivers are speeding through the crosswalk with yielding.
Working with the Everett Elementary Schoo, we came up with a design that will shift the location of the crosswalk north, closer to Hesston Terrace. This will provide more room for arrival and dismissal loading near the school entrance, while keeping the crosswalk clear of parked cars.
Residents raised concerns about the visibility of pedestrians in the existing Victoria Street crossing and suggested this would be a good location to add a crosswalk. Additionally, there are no pedestrian ramps don't the west side of Pleasant Street.
We will build a raised crosswalk across Pleasant Street, add curb extensions to slow speeds, and create a safer crossing. We will shift the location of the existing crossing north toward Morrill Street. We'll also upgrade pedestrian curb ramps and expand the existing green space.
Residents raised concerns about drivers not slowing down at the Mayfield Street intersection. They indicated that drivers tend to start speeding up here and that on-street parking blocks visibility of pedestrians intending to cross. Residents made requests for improved visibility and safety in the Mayfield Street crossings.
We'll add curb extensions to slow speeding and make crossing safer by improving visibility at the crosswalk. We'll also upgrade pedestrian curb ramps, restripe crosswalks, and add existing green space.
Residents raised concerns that there are not enough marked crossings of Pleasant Street and suggested that the City provide additional crossing opportunities.
We'll add a raised crosswalk and curb extensions at the intersection of Pleasant Street and Willis Street to create a safe crossing and slow speeds.
Project History
Past eventsIn late 2024, we awarded a construction contract to D'Allesandro Corporation. We worked with the Office of Supplier Diversity to ensure the contract included subcontracts with minority and women-owned businesses. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer.
We hosted a virtual meting to share proposed changes along Pleasant Street. To get the word out, we sent postcards to residents living on or near the street. We provided interpretation in Spanish, Vietnamese, and Cape Verdean Creole.
