Roxbury Branch Public Art Projects

The City commissioned and restored several public artworks to complement the renovation of the Roxbury Branch of the Boston Public Library.

The City of Boston completed a $17.2 million renovation of the Roxbury Library Branch in October 2020. The City commissioned two new public art projects through the Percent for Art program:

  • "R-O-X-B-U-R-Y", by Joe Wardwell in collaboration with poet Nakia Hill and youth from 826 Boston’s Youth Literary Advisory Board, and
  • "Turmoil", by Jeremy "Sobek" Harrison, located in the library's main entrance.

In addition to new commissions, the City also restored and reinstalled "The Word" by Vusumuzi Maduna and Obie Simonis onto the facade of the library.

Percent for Art Projects

R-O-X-B-U-R-Y

The project created a colorful, layered installation of poetry and Roxbury landscapes on three walls at the Roxbury Branch of the Boston Public Library.

Turmoil

This interior artwork is located in the library's main entrance, housing the African-American collection.
