Public Art Conservation
Caring for the artworks that shape our city's public spaces.
The Boston Art Commission (BAC), in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture, is entrusted with managing the care and conservation of artworks that are part of the City of Boston’s art collection. Spanning across every one of our neighborhoods, the collection highlights the diversity, history, and creativity of Boston’s communities. Located across land managed by different departments and ranging from neighborhood murals to large-scale monuments, these works woven into the fabric of Boston’s public spaces are free and accessible to all.
About
“The [Boston Art Commission] shall have the custody and care of all works of art owned by the city and heretofore under the control of any department thereof.”
SPECIAL ACTS, 1919. — CHAP. 87. PAGE 48, SECTION 3.
By maintaining these artworks, we ensure that the stories embedded in our city’s public spaces remain vibrant and accessible to future generations. Maintaining public artworks requires routine preventative care by qualified professionals. A maintenance plan is developed for each artwork, outlining the necessary treatments, responsible parties, and financial obligations. We collaborate with many partners such as Daedalus Conservation and community groups to ensure the long-term care of artworks on a project-by-project basis.
