Install or Replace a Window

If you’re replacing an existing window or creating a new window, you’ll need either a Short-form or a Long-form permit, depending on what type of work you’re doing.

Who can install or replace windows?

  • Homeowners and contractors can apply for the Short-form or Long-form Permit.
  • Homeowners and contractors can install or replace windows if the work is being done on a 1-2 unit owner-occupied home.
  • You must hire a contractor to perform the work if it’s being done on a three-family or bigger dwelling, such as:
    • an apartment building
    • a multi-unit condo, or
    • one floor of a triple-decker house.

What permits do I need?

Short-Form Permit
  • For replacing a window that already exists and no other structural changes need to be made, such as expanding the window size.
OR
Long-Form Permit
  • For creating a new window where one did not exist, or when any structural changes need to be made, such as opening a wall or expanding the window size.
