City Council resolution supports rescheduling redistricting

A Bill that started in the House Ways and Means Committee has made its way to the Senate Ways and Means Committee for a vote.

The Bill was supported in a Resolution by the Council at this week’s meeting. The bill, H.3863, would change the existing law whereby cities and towns must redraw local precinct boundaries by June 15. However that date is expected to fall more than three months before the U.S. Census Bureau expects local population data to be fully delivered, a delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

H.3863 would remove the impending deadline and let the legislature redraw state and federal districts without the updated local precinct data. Upon approval of new maps, cities and towns would then have 30 days to complete their precincts, which must be done by December 15. This change would only apply to the current decennial redistricting process.
