Madison Cox

Community Outreach Specialist

Madison Cox (she/her/hers) is a recent transplant to Boston by way of Memphis, Tennessee, who serves as the Community Outreach Specialist for the Mayor’s Office of Returning Citizens.

Growing up in the Memphis metropolitan area and attending a fine arts high school in small-town Mississippi, Madison was exposed to many issues facing her community — ranging from educational access disparities to historically discriminatory infrastructures — and became interested in learning how she could intentionally engage with these issues to fight for a better South and a better world.

Madison received her Bachelor of Arts with Honors in English and a certificate in Journalism from Indiana University - Bloomington where she was heavily involved in student leadership, serving as an Indiana Memorial Union Board programming director, an Orientation Leader, a club president, and a marketing assistant for the LGBTQ+ Culture Center. After graduating, Madison remained in higher education and student affairs, serving in roles at Emerson College’s Campus Centers and Boston College’s Office of Student Involvement. These experiences bolstered her passion for her community and provided her with invaluable skills such as student development theory, event management, and community engagement.

As Community Outreach Specialist, Madison connects with current and potential partners on the local and national level to develop and strengthen relationships between these partners, the Office of Returning Citizens, returning citizens of Boston, and other Boston residents. Her focus is in understanding the varied needs of returning citizens, connecting with partners to identify or establish resources which address those needs, communicating resources in ways that are both accessible and intuitive, and ensuring public awareness of resources for returning citizens in the City.

Though still new to the City, Madison enjoys hobbies such as visiting museums, navigating the T, and scouring the streets for the perfect chai latte. She also loves writing, listening to music, and tending to her extensive plant collection.
