Install or Replace Insulation

Installing or replacing the insulation in your home or building can help reduce your energy use and save on your utility bill.

The state of Massachusetts and the City of Boston support insulation installation through programs like Mass Save.

Who can install or replace insulation?

  • Homeowners and contractors can apply for the Short-form Permit and install or replace insulation if the work is being done on a 1-2 unit owner-occupied home.
  • You must hire a contractor to apply for the permit and perform the work if it’s being done on a three-family or bigger dwelling, such as:
    • an apartment building
    • a multi-unit condo, or
    • one floor of a triple-decker house.
