Install or Replace Pipes or Plumbing Fixtures

If you’re replacing or installing plumbing pipes or fixtures you’ll need to hire a contractor who can apply for a Plumbing Permit and perform the work.

If you are renovating an entire bathroom, please refer to the renovate a bathroom or kitchen website instead.

Who can install or replace?

  • Homeowners and contractors can apply for the Short-form Permit.

  • Only a contractor with a valid, non-expired Massachusetts trade license may apply for a Plumbing Permit and perform any plumbing work related to installing or replacing plumbing pipes and fixtures.

What permits do I need?

Short-Form Permit
  • Only if you need to open up any non-structural walls while performing the work.
Additional Permits

You may need other permits that only licensed contractors can apply for, including:

  • If you are replacing or installing exposed pipes and plumbing fixtures, such as in a basement.
