Install or Replace a Window
If you’re replacing an existing window or creating a new window, you’ll need either a Short-form or a Long-form permit, depending on what type of work you’re doing.
Who can install or replace windows?
- Homeowners and contractors can apply for the Short-form or Long-form Permit.
- Homeowners and contractors can install or replace windows if the work is being done on a 1-2 unit owner-occupied home.
- You must hire a contractor to perform the work if it’s being done on a three-family or bigger dwelling, such as:
- an apartment building
- a multi-unit condo, or
- one floor of a triple-decker house.
What permits do I need?
Short-Form Permit
- For replacing a window that already exists and no other structural changes need to be made, such as expanding the window size.
OR
Long-Form Permit
- For creating a new window where one did not exist, or when any structural changes need to be made, such as opening a wall or expanding the window size.
