Boston MBTA Shutdowns 2025

Upcoming Diversions and Shutdowns

June 21 - 29

During weekends (June 21 - 22 and June 28 - 29):

  • Orange Line service will be suspended between North Station and Forest Hills
  • Free and accessible shuttle buses will make all stops between Forest Hills and Back Bay, as well as Copley on the Green Line. The Green Line may be used for continued service between Back Bay/Copley and North Station. The Green Line C Branch will also be extended to serve North Station during this time period.
  • An accessible van will directly serve stations between North Station and Back Bay, as well as Copley on the Green Line. Riders should see onsite personnel to request this van service.

During weekdays (June 23 - 27):

  • Orange Line service will be suspended between Back Bay and Forest Hills
  • Free and accessible shuttle buses will make all stops between Forest Hills and Back Bay.

During all service change dates:

  • The Commuter Rail will be fare-free between Forest Hills, Ruggles, Back Bay, and South Station. Riders should note that regular fares should be purchased beyond Forest Hills.
  • Bus Route 39 will be fare-free and additional service will be provided
  • The City of Boston will be offering free BlueBikes during this closure, while supplies lasts. Use code JUN2125ORNG and see the Bicycle Information tab for a suggested bike route.

July 10 - 13 and July 17 - 20

Red Line service will be suspended between Kendall/MIT and JFK/UMass on July 10 - 13 and July 17 - 20.

Beginning at approx. 8:30PM on Thursday, July 10, and all day every day, for the next three days (July 11 - 13) and beginning again and approx. 8:30PM on Thursday, July 17, and all day every day, for the next three days (July 18 - 20).

  • Free and accessible shuttle bus service will make all stops between Kendall/MIT and JFK/UMass, with the exception of Park Street. Shuttle buses will also serve State (Orange and Blue Line connections) and Haymarket (Orange and Green Line connections) for easier connections to other subway lines. Riders using shuttle buses during this service change should budget ample extra traveling time.
  • The City of Boston will be offering 5 free BlueBikes during this closure, while supplies lasts. Use code MBTAREDJUL10 for the July 10 - 13 closure and code MBTAREDJUL17 for the July 17 - 20 closure. See the Bicycle Information tab for a suggested bike route.

There will be free fares with the fare gates open at JFK/UMass, Kendall/MIT, Haymarket, State, and South Station.

Riders are encouraged to consider fare-free Commuter Rail service between Braintree and South Station, as well as between Porter and North Station.

July 26 - Aug 24

Forest Hills bound Orange Line trains will bypass Jackson Square Station from July 26 - Aug 24.

  • This bypass will occur from 21:00 (9:00PM) to end of service each night.

This bypass is occurring to allow for the MBTA to perform accessibility and modernization improvements at the station. Learn more about the project at www.mbta.com/projects/jackson-square-station-accessibility-improvements.

July 26 - 27 and Aug 9 - 10

Orange Line service will be suspended between Wellington and Back Bay on July 26 - 27 and Aug 9 - 10.

  • Free and accessible shuttle bus service will make all stops between Wellington and North Station. Express shuttle buses will operate directly between Wellington and North Station. Riders using shuttle buses during this service change should budget ample extra traveling time.
  • Riders should use the Green Line for continued service from North Station to Copley (5 min walk from Back Bay Station). The MBTA will increase Green Line service during this time to accommodate Orange Line riders.

There will be free fares with the fare gates open at Back Bay, Copley, Wellington, and North Station.

Riders are encouraged to consider fare-free Commuter Rail service between Oak Grove and North Station, as well as between Forest Hills and South Station.

July 26 - 27

Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail Line service will be suspended between South Station and Framingham on July 26 - 27. A dedicated diversion schedule will be available on mbta.com.

  • Free and accessible shuttle bus service will replace train service between Framingham and South Station. There will be four (4) shuttle routes available during this closure.
  • Shuttle Route #1: Route 1 will operate between Framingham, West Natick, Natick Center, Wellesley Sq, Wellesley Hills, and South Station.
  • Shuttle Route #2: Route 2 will operate between Wellesley Hills, Riverside (on the Green Line D Branch), Auburndale, West Newton, Newtonville, Boston Landing, and South Station.
  • Shuttle Route #3: Route 3 will operate between Framingham, West Natick, Natick Center, Wellesley Sq, Wellesley Hills, and Back Bay.
  • Shuttle Route #4: Route 4 will operate between Wellesley Hills, Riverside (on the Green Line D Branch), Auburndale, West Newton, Newtonville, Boston Landing, and Back Bay.

There will be no shuttle bus stops at Wellesley Farms and Lansdowne. Passengers who typically board at Wellesley Farms should instead travel to Riverside. Passengers who typically board at Lansdowne should instead travel to Kenmore for shuttle bus service or to connect to the Green Line B, C, and D Branches for connections toward South Station.

Commuter Rail service between Worcester and Framingam will be fare-free during this service change.

Aug 2 - 10

Red Line service will be suspended between North Quincy and Braintree on Aug 2 - 10.

  • Free and accessible shuttle bus service will make all stops between North Quincy and Braintree. Riders using shuttle buses during this service change should budget ample extra traveling time.

During the Orange Line shutdown from June 21 - 19, riders are strongly encouraged to use bikes as an alternative mode of transportation. The above map has been created by bikers for bikers, and provides a recommended route with notes on the conditions of various segments. We are offering free BlueBikes unlocks during the shutdown, limited to five trips per user during each closure. The unlocks will be available while supplies last.
