Gregory T. Rooney

Commissioner, Property Management

In September 2021, Gregory Rooney was named Commissioner of the City's Property Management Department, which works to ensure that the City of Boston's municipal buildings are welcoming, vibrant, and safe. In this role, Commissioner Rooney leads the maintenance and management of various City of Boston buildings, coordinates layout and space planning for City departments, and oversees building security, and events. 

Rooney has worked for the City of Boston for almost 30 years and formerly served as Commissioner of the Boston Transportation Department, which works to advance a safe and equitable transportation network, as well as Commissioner of the Property Management Department from 2016-2019. Before working at Property Management, Rooney served for nine years at the Boston Transportation Department, where he worked as the Director of Parking Management. Prior to that role, Rooney worked as the Deputy Commissioner of Transportation for the former Commission on Affairs of the Elderly, where he oversaw all transportation-related needs of Boston's older residents.

Rooney earned his bachelor's of science in Political Science from Northeastern University and a Master of Public Administration from Northeastern University.
