Laura Alves

Manager of Strategic Initiatives

Laura joined the Office of Food Justice in January 2023. Her work is at the intersection of building a healthy and just local food system and addressing the food system’s climate impacts.

She leads the policy implementation of values-based procurement for food. This means she supports City departments to buy food from sources that are sustainable, local, and humane. She also works on developing ways the City can help connect appropriate surplus food to residents through food recovery.

Laura started with the City of Boston in 2019 in its Environment Department working on implementing the City’s zero waste plan. Before entering local government she contracted with several groups who focused on food and food systems. Before being a contractor she worked in corporate sustainability. She holds a Bachelor of Industrial Design degree from Syracuse University.

While growing up in a suburb north of the city, Laura has roots in Boston. Her parents come from Dorchester and Charlestown, and her grandfather once owned a carpentry shop in the Leather District. She enjoys urban living — calling four different Boston neighborhoods home over time.
